VERN SCHUPPAN O.A.M.
The Festival of Speed on Tweed is proud to introduce former Formula One driver, Vern Schuppan O.A.M. as its new patron following the completion of motorsport legend Frank Gardner’s three-year term in this role. Vern was a special guest at the 2005 Festival of Speed on Tweed and said, This is one of the best events of its type in the world. From the way it is run, the friendly atmosphere and the accessibility to drivers and cars, it all adds up to a great chance to see some of the best in the world. It is the one event in Australia that I would not want to miss.
Vern’s illustrious racing career began in his home state of South Australia when he became South Australian Karting Champion two years running in 1965 and 1966 at the age of 22. Vern moved to the United Kingdom in 1969 and over the years won the British Formula Atlantic Championship; the Singapore Grand Prix; the Macau Grand Prix; the Rothmans Motor Show 200 at Brands Hatch and the Oran Park Australia F5000 together with many 2nd and 3rd placings.
1983 was Vern’s year when in the one year he won the famous Le Mans 24 Hour race in his Porsche 956 as well as the Fuji 500 km; the Suzuka 500 km; the Fuji 1000 km; the Suzuka 1000 km and the Japan Sportscar Drivers Championship. In 1984 Vern was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia by Queen Elizabeth for his services to Motor Racing.
Vern continued to race actively in the United States, Japan, Europe and Australia up until 1990 when he retired from active driving to concentrate on running Team Schuppan and building cars.
Vern said, "Frank (Gardner) has worked hard with Roger and his team at the Festival to grow this event into the success it is today. I have big shoes to fill."
"We have no doubt at all that Vern will be an excellent ambassador for the Festival of Speed on Tweed and we are proud to have him on board", said Festival Director, Roger Ealand.
