It didn’t take the Festival of Speed on Tweed long to make its mark in the historic car racing movement throughout Australia. Never before has a race been embraced so generously by aficionados of the sport. Since 2002, every September, 20,000 racing enthusiasts converged on the northern NSW town of Murwillumbah for the annual historic speed trials, turning the town into a black and white spectacle of flags adorning the streets and local people decking themselves out in crazy clothing.
Now, after 7 years, the Festival attracts some of the most famous names in the racing industry and you are likely to see John Goss, Kevin Bartlett or John Bowe and Jim Richards having a quiet coffee at a local café, or Sir Jack Brabham driving one of his beloved Repco Brabhams around the racing circuit. These are just some of the legendary drivers who are now regular guests at Speed on Tweed.
And cars – did we mention cars ! Some of the most famous cars in Australia’s racing history have graced our streets – Ferraris, GT40s, Bathurst winners galore and old Grand Prix cars from as far back as 1928. They have all been to Speed on Tweed and the people love them.
The main street of town turns into one huge party with a family orientated street parade on Friday night and the glitz and glamour of a grand concert and dining extravaganza on Saturday night.
The Festival of Speed on Tweed is a non-profit event run by the Rotary Club of Murwillumbah together with a group of extremely dedicated volunteers. Over $160,000.00 has been donated to national charities such as Childrens Cancer Institute and The Peter Brock Foundation as well as local Service Clubs, schools, Emergency Services and Hospitals.
In 2008 the Festival of Speed on Tweed is proud to support the McGrath Foundation, which supports the ongoing fight against breast cancer and things may turn a little bit ‘Pink”.
Sadly, 2008 will be our “Last Hurrah”, the last year that the Speed on Tweed team will be organising the Festival. The team has had a great time, a big adventure, lots of laughs and a great feeling of pride in knowing that they helped bring such wonderful entertainment to Murwillumbah over the last 7 years.
So this means we will be going out with a BANG and calling this year’s event ‘SIMPLY THE BEST’ – the BEST cars, some of Australia’s BEST drivers and the BEST entertainment.
SO DON’T YOU DARE MISS IT.
